About Sofia University

Sofia University is the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria, founded on 1 October 1888. The edifice of the university was constructed between 1924 and 1934 with the financial support of the brothers Evlogi Georgiev and Hristo Georgie, whose sculptures are now featured on its façade, and has an area of 18,624 m² and 324 premises. The university has 16 faculties and three departments, where over 21,000 students receive their education.

Accreditations

All Bulgarian Medical Schools are internationally accredited and acknowledged globally. They are listed on the WHO (World Health Organization) and the FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research) directories of international medical schools and are on the IMED (International Medical Education Directory) and Avicenna Directories, both of which are public databases of medical schools worldwide.

Degree Awarded

The degrees awarded by higher academic Institutions in Bulgaria are accredited by the NEAA (Bulgarian National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency), which is a member of the ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education) and the EQAR (European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education).

Accommodation

All Bulgarian Medical Universities offer on-campus hostel accommodation, which does not exceed £33 per month. However, the number of available rooms for foreign students is limited as Bulgarian students to whom universities give priority occupy the majority of rooms. Therefore, international students prefer to rent or share a private flat near the University, as the cost is very low, around £161-219 per month. All students are obliged to sign a contract with the proprietor because it is required as proof of residence for the issuance of the Residence Permit at the local Migration Office.

Pathway

Applications to Sofia University require a two week preparation course and entrance exam prepared by Educom.
